Bioweine halten was sie versprechen Organic Eprints
Wyss, Gabriela S..

Culturable Fungi of Stored ‘Golden Delicious’ Apple Fruits: A One-Season Comparison Study of Organic and Integrated Production Systems in Switzerland Organic Eprints
Granado, José; Thürig, Barbara; Kieffer, Edith; Petrini, Liliane; Fliessbach, Andreas; Tamm, Lucius; Weibel, Franco; Wyss, Gabriela S..
The effects of organic and integrated production systems on the culturable fungal microflora of stored apple fruits from five matched pairs of certified organic and integrated ‘Golden Delicious’ farms were studied at five representative production sites in Switzerland. Isolated fungi were identified morphologically. Colonization frequency (percentage of apples colonized), abundance (colony numbers), and diversity (taxon richness) were assessed for each orchard. The standard quality of the stored fruits was comparable for both organic and integrated apples and complied with national food hygiene standards. Yeasts (six taxa) and the yeast-like fungus Aureobasidium pullulans were the dominant epiphytes, filamentous fungi (21 taxa) the dominant endophytes. The...

Bieber, Anna; Seidel, Kathrin; Wyss, Gabriela S.; Maurer, Veronika; Zeltner, Esther.
In order to test the effect of organic vs. conventional diets on fertility traits, we conducted an on-farm study with female rabbits. Eight groups of seven to eight female rabbits kept in systems with litter were fed ad libitum with either organic or conventional pellets. Offspring was weaned with approx. 28 days. In the first series analysed, the conception rate was higher in the conventional groups. Diet type had no significant influence on that trait. Nevertheless, a significant influence of diet on litter size was found: organically fed female rabbits produced more offspring per litter. The organic groups also showed higher rates of weaned animals, despite of a slightly higher mortality of offspring in these groups, but differences for both...

Erfahrungen mit Nützlingen bei Schädlingsbefall in lebensmittelverarbeitenden Betrieben Organic Eprints
Wyss, Gabriela S.; Fassbind, Daniel; Brand, Susanne; Zingg, Daniel.
Stored products may be prone for insect damage. Storage management and process-ing of organic products allow the use of chemicals in empty storage rooms only. Bene-ficial insects might be an alternative in special environments and for direct control in and on organic produce. The deliberate release of beneficial insects in storage rooms has not been tested to a large extend and if so, in small enterprises only. In the time span 2006 - 2008, a practical approach for the control of stored-product pest insects is followed amongst others in a pasta factory and a large bakery in Switzerland. Part of the project is the establishment of laboratory-mass-reared parasitoids and predators, e.g. the parasitic wasp Anisopteromalus calandrae for the control of the...

How to understand the complexity of product quality and the challenges in differentiating between organically and conventionally grown products – exemplified by fresh and heat-processed carrots (Daucus carota L.) Organic Eprints
Seljåsen, Randi; Kristensen, Hanne Lakkenborg; Kretzschmar, Ursula; Birlouez, I; Paoletti, F; Lauridsen, Charlotte; Wyss, Gabriela S.; Busscher, Nicolaas; Mengheri, Elena; Sinesio, F.; Zanoli, Raffaele; Vairo, Daniela; Beck, Alexander; Kahl, J..
Quality traits are highly focused upon in the marketing of organic food products. There is a need to define and measure quality as consumers seem to have preconceived notions about the superior health value and taste of organic compared to non-organic products. A commonly held opinion among many consumer groups is that organic farming guarantees optimum quality, despite the fact that this remains unproven. The aim of this paper is to contribute to a better understanding of the complexity of quality traits in a plant-based food product, using carrots as an example. Selected designated quality aspects are presented to describe the complexity of quality and discuss the challenges of using these aspects in differentiating between organic and conventional...

Influence of activated charcoal amendment to contaminated soil on dieldrin and nutrient uptake by cucumbers Organic Eprints
Hilber, Isabel; Wyss, Gabriela S.; Mäder, Paul; Bucheli, Thomas D.; Meier, Isabel; Vogt, Lea; Schulin, Rainer.
Activated charcoal (AC) amendments have been suggested as a promising, cost-effective method to immobilize organic contaminants in soil. We performed pot experiments over two years with cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) grown in agricultural soil with 0.07 mg kg_1 of weathered dieldrin and 0, 200, 400, and 800 mg AC per kg soil. Dieldrin fresh weight concentrations in cucumber fruits were significantly reduced from 0.012 to an average of 0.004 mg kg_1, and total uptake from 2 to 1 mg in the 800 mg kg_1 AC treatment compared to the untreated soil. The treatment effects differed considerably between the two years, due to different meteorological conditions. AC soil treatments did neither affect the availability of nutrients to the cucumber plants nor their yield...

Konzept zur Beurteilung von Pestizidrückständen in Bioprodukten Organic Eprints
Wyss, Gabriela S.; Nowack Heimgartner, Karin.

Organochlorine pesticide residues assessed in a greenhouse survey in 2005 and a concept of bioavailability experiments Organic Eprints
Hilber, Isabel; Wyss, Gabriela S.; Mäder, Paul; Schulin, Rainer.
Organochlorine pesticides (OCP’s), such as dieldrin or DDT, were applied world wide against pests in horticulture, fruit and arable crops. Although OCP’s were banned 20 years ago, they still persist in soils and are taken up by the plants (Mandl and Lindner 1999). OCP residues in soil, for instance dieldrin, has been detected in high economic value crops (Wyss et al., 2004) such as cucumber and pumpkin (Cucurbitaceae), which strongly accumulate OCP in their fruits. Consumers generally expect that food is safe and uncontaminated, but those who buy organically grown products are particularly concerned about health and thus sensitive to food quality. Therefore, OCP residues in organic food stuff have become a major issue not only for food control authorities,...

Pestizidrückstände auf Bio-Produkten - Beurteilung der Kontaminationswege am Beispiel Bio-Wein Organic Eprints
Seiler, Kurt; Erzinger, Florian; Wyss, Gabriela S..

Quality of carrots as affected by pre- and postharvest factors and processing Organic Eprints
Seljåsen, Randi; Kristensen, Hanne L.; Lauridsen, Charlotte; Wyss, Gabriela S.; Kretzschmar, Ursula; Birlouez-Aragone, Inès; Kahl, Johannes.
The aim of this review is to provide an update on factors contributing to quality of carrots, with special focus on the role of pre- and postharvest factors and processing. The genetic factor shows the highest impact on quality variables in carrots, causing a 7–11-fold difference between varieties in content of terpenes, β-carotene, magnesium, iron and phenolics as well as a 1–4-fold difference in falcarindiol, bitter taste and sweet taste. Climate-related factors may cause a difference of up to 20-fold for terpenes, 82% for total sugars and 30–40% for β-carotene, sweet taste and bitter taste. Organic farming in comparison with conventional farming has shown 70% higher levels for magnesium and 10% for iron. Low nitrogen fertilisation level may cause up to...

Soil amendment with activated charcoal can reduce dieldrin uptake by cucumbers Organic Eprints
Hilber, Isabel; Vogt, Lea; Wyss, Gabriela S.; Mäder, Paul; Schulin, Rainer.
Organochlorine pesticides (OCP) were once applied world wide but have been banned meanwhile in most countries because of their ecotoxicity, bioaccumulation and persistence. However, residues can still be present in soils even many years after applications have been stopped and taken up by crop plants. OCP accumulation from bound residues was found to be a particular problem in Cucurbitaceae plants. Two soil surveys performed in 2002 and 2005 in Switzerland revealed that OCP residues were taken up by cucumbers grown in soils that have been converted to organic production in the meantime. Even if legal tolerance values are not exceeded, this is a serious economic problem for the farmers affected by contaminated crops, because consumers of organically grown...

Survey of organochlorine pesticides in horticultural soils and there grown Cucurbitaceae Organic Eprints
Hilber, Isabel; Mäder, Paul; Schulin, Rainer; Wyss, Gabriela S..
Organochlorine pesticides (OCP) are still found in food and feed crops although they were applied about 40 years ago. There is a considerable knowledge gap concerning the extent of soil and crop contamination by OCP. We performed two surveys in 2002 and 2005 to assess the loads of OCP in 41 Swiss horticultural fields under organic and conventional production and corresponding Cucurbitaceae fruits (cucumbers, zucchini, and pumpkin), whereas these fields stay for intensive agricultural production in Europe. In addition, soil organic carbon, texture, and pH were measured also. OCP were detected in 27 out of 41 fields (65.9%). The farming practice had no influence on the contamination or level of OCP in soil. The sum of OCP-loads per field ranged from <0.01...
